Dodgeball is a fantastic sport for all ages, sporting abilities and body types and perfect for keeping fit whilst having fun. Also it acts as a great way to relieve stress, why not invite your boss down to dodgeball - what a perfect way to take out some frustration (or vice versa in his case!). The sport encourages teamwork and most importantly, fast paced fun! Firstly, we'll make you familiar with the basic rules of Dodgeball. Each team has 6 players on court, with up to 4 substitutes. There are 3 balls placed evenly apart in the centre of the court in the dead zone.
The court is marked out with tape, roughly a metre longer than a badminton court on each ends, and a metre wider. There is a dead zone about half a metre wide in the centre.
When the whistle is blown, 3 players from either team run to try and retrieve the balls in the centre. The balls must then be thrown to the back of the team's court before they are thrown.

Throw Together
If you have two or three balls, throw all together at the same time. | Don't step over those Lines
When running for the balls at the beginning, make sure you don't go out of the court else you are out! | Block & Protect your Team
If you have one ball, get infront of your teammates and block incoming balls to protect them. |
Teams now take it in turns to throw the balls at each other. You are out if:
- A player is hit by a ball before it hits the floor or wall.
- If a player catches a ball, the person who threw that ball is out and the team of the person who made the catch gets a player back in (the player first out).
- If you drop a catch, you are out.
- If you step on or out of the lines of the court boundaries, you are out.
Players may use a ball to block an incoming ball. However, if they drop the ball they use to block on impact, they are also out.
If a ball bounces on the wall or floor before it hits a player, they are not out and the ball is deemed 'dead'.
All areas of the body, including the head (for over 16s), can be aimed at.

Catches win Matches
Catches are more valuable than hits on the opponents as you get a teammate back in. | Win those Balls
Try and collect as many balls at the start as possible | Dodge!!
The most important thing to remember is to always dodge! |
Without confusing beginners, there is a 5 second rule, which means if you have the majority of the balls and the majority of the players, you must throw the balls within 5 seconds else you are out. For new players to the sport, we don't use this rule to begin with, and then introduce it slowly.
Games last 2 minutes or until one team loses all their players. Games are usually best-of-five or best-of-seven with a minute of overtime in case of a draw.
The UKDBA has a comprehensive list of Official rules on their website. |
